In th CTIndustry section (pg 16) of the latest CT edition (April 2008), there's a mention of mobile SL: "Linden Lab's Second Life virtual world platform will soon be available on 3G mobile handsets, via a streaming mobile games service from Vollee (www.vollee.com). The mobile service reformats Second Life to fit on a cell phone screen, and maps the handset keys to in-world commands".
It would be interesting to see this demoed... I'm excited about it, but I wonder about the usability.

It all depends on the educators. Some are eager to experiment with new things like Second Life; others are more interested in doing things the same way that they always have. To be fair, Second Life has plenty of drawbacks for education (technology barriers, security, age restrictions, content delivery, etc), but it does have great potential for activities such as interactive simulations -- if the faculty have the time and inclination to try it. Thankfully, some do, and have already created some terrific things in Second Life. My current favorites are Virtual Morocco (on Casablanca), NOAA (on Meteora), Genome Island, Virtual Hallucinations (on Sedig) and Virtual Starry Night (on Luctesa; like NOAA, it's not built by educators, but definitely could be used in the classroom).
When I talk to educators about Second Life, I suggest that they create their accounts through The New Media Consortium; their orientation actually works, and once they complete it, they are already surrounded by fellow educators and educational sims. A successful first experience goes a long way.
